Bellagio and Tyrol 26&27 September

After nice stay in Bellagio- good evening meal -Peter had lake fish and I had excellent seafood spaghetti.
Had easy drive down to car ferry and caught the 9.20 ferry to Varenna for a scenic drive across country to the Dolomites. Very good weather and looking very for driving.
Features of our scenic journey which was great: extremely windy road and the suggested 90kph in some parts was scary especially when you met an oncoming vehicle traveling fast
After climbing we then followed straight along a fertile valley then started to climb again on more windy roads. This was ski territory and we passed through a number of ski resort towns which looked ver Austrian and German. Saw snow on the mountain tops and the lifts and ski runs currently green grass and not operational. Eventually we seemed to be at the top with no trees. Stopped formorningtea of coffee and then shared a pizza at Avery Austrian restaurant. We eventually made it to Hotel Tyrol.

We thought we were in Germany!! – German speaking , not Italian. Typical German Austrian buildings- another lovely room with pretty outlook to the mountains.

Isola Bella & Stresa 24&25 Sept

Stresa is gorgeous – small, right on Lake Maggiore . It has a character filled main piazza lined with restaurants and cafes.
Coffee , walk, lunch of Sicilian salad and mussels ,washed down by beer and then walk along the lake or promenade with many other people – Italian and all sorts/ very touristy. BeAutiful weather and a few were sunbathing on small pebbly beach! Some grand hotels along the waterfront.
Isola Bella is one of the Borromean Islands, about 400 metres off Stresa. Ferry across was easy to get and relatively cheap. Took about 10 minutes to reach Isola Bella.
The baroque palace was a surprise, very grand and sumptuous. And there were lots of other tourists! Tour groups etc. Along with the Palace comes a luxuriant Italian-style garden, which reaches a height of 37 metres it is laid out on ten terraces. Many parts of the palace are open to visitors: richly furnished rooms and opulent salons embellished with priceless artworks.  The morano glass chandeliers were spectacular. The grotto space was interesting. But overall the palace was much bigger and more ornate than we had imagined .
The garden is full of flowers and exotic plants of great rarity, which grow thanks to the particularly mild climate of the Borromean Gulf. Everything on the island has been designed to create a scenic effect, including the “Theatre” constructed at the end of the superimposed terraces, dominated by a statue of a Unicorn, the heraldic emblem of the Borromeos, which is flanked by statues representing Nature and Art. The huge, extraordinary garden is further decorated with ponds, fountains and a plethora of statues dating from the second half of the 17th century.

The white peacocks that wander over the manicured lawns add their grace to this enchanting spot. It was really the imposing statues that made the gardens so different and so impressiveness .

Tour in the afternoon
DaVinci’s Last Supper The Last Supper is a late 15th-century mural painting by Leonardo da Vinci housed by the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan.
Castello again
La Scala
Duomo
What we learnttoday- a great deal! Excellent tour and guide- warm and beautiful weather
• Leonardo da Vinci – totally amazing, lived in Milan for 20 years – Milanese own him! Milan went to war with France and Leo ended up in France and died there at Amboise.
• Last Supper- beautiful, reflects the Renaissance attitude, shows his interest in human body , perspective in monastery in room where monks had breakfast/ limited numbers at any time
• Milanese history fascinating – the site of Milan has been settled for 2500 years – once surrounded by canals and water which came from the lakes. Also Milan occupied by the Hapsburgs as well as French and Napoleon who crowned himself king of Italy in Duomo
• La Scala theatre- six levels of boxes- ballet practice was going on – mainly used for opera and ballet/ interesting collection of artifacts in museum
• Duomo – huge , pale marble , started 600 years back but only finished a 100 years ago . In beautiful square with Galleria Emmanuel going off to one side – cultural and tourist center- tough security with police and army
• Castello Sforzesco – huge and impressive – clearly built for defense You enter by iron gates across moat now grassed. Family Sforza were major owners ( Ducale or prince of Milan) and powerful family. Interesting history
• Milan was powerful city from Roman times when it was capital of western Roman Empire and has remained a major political centre
Ristorante Savini
Out to a very ordinary restaurant for a pizza and salad. Food was ok but…. salmon pizza lacked salmon and was dominated by the tomato sauce, Caesar was average. Wine expensive and the water didn’t come till halfway through the meal.
